West Kootenay Celiac Group

Notes from the Saturday, April 10th 2010 meeting held at the BC Health Office, 333 Victoria St. Nelson.

Only nine people attended – but what a great discussion! We had 6 newcomers from Kaslo, Trail, Fruitvale and Nelson.

We started with the important part – FOOD! Pizza and cookies were provided by Nikki Pelletier, who has a small local baking business called OMG gluten-free Fare.  She has a small line of foods, and sells them (muffins at least) through Kootenay Co-op.  These she bakes at a time-share commercial kitchen, but also does custom GF cooking//baking from her home.  She will be providing us with info on her range of products and I will pass it on.

We discuss buying in ethic and natural food stores for large bags of some flours and starch. Good places to try are:

Salmo Foods on Davies (Salmo) is good for bulk buys of flours

Fran mentioned that Costco in Washington is a good place for Rice Chex cereal (the Canadian version is not GF)

Nell passed around the magazine “Living Without”. There latest online feature article is about Gluten Free for Le$$ –  www.livingwithout.com

Fran brought in articles about a new restaurant in Trail “Lovin’ Oven” is in the Union Hotel and providing food not made with processed foods, chemicals or preservatives.

Don will submit a loose-leaf binder to the Nelson Public Library on Victoria. It will go in the reference section and contain collected articles, information and recipes for those who do not have email.

Jane (with Jackie and Nell’s help) will start the task of contacting restaurants (in the Nelson area first) – giving them info about celiac, menus, the glutenfreeregistry. com site and concerns of cross contamination. Once the procedure is established, others will be asked to approach restaurants in their towns.

Jane will contact Ron Matthews, the program contact in the Selkirk professional Cook Training Program in Nelson to see what education about celiac prep is being offered to students.

We decided that our next meeting will feature Dr. Brenda Gill – hopefully on June 8th at 7 pm. Nell will contact Lynda about Dr. Gill and Don will arrange room reservations – stay tuned. She has a blog on the Rossland Telegraph website – www.rosslandtelegraph.com
